Toronto has two large cemetery operators and both set a cast bronze marker that the family buys elsewhere, as long as it meets their by-law and they install it themselves. Mount Pleasant Group runs Mount Pleasant, York, Prospect, Pine Hills, Elgin Mills, Meadowvale, Thornton, Duffin Meadows, Beechwood in Vaughan and the Toronto Necropolis under by-laws effective May 1, 2024. Catholic Cemeteries and Funeral Services of the Archdiocese of Toronto runs Holy Cross, Assumption, Queen of Heaven, Christ the King, Mount Hope, Resurrection, St. Mary’s and about twenty parish cemeteries under by-laws revised in January 2022. Their size envelopes, base rules and fees differ, and the Catholic by-law has a delivery rule that matters to anyone ordering online. This page quotes both, adds St. James Cemetery, and explains what we supply: the bronze, cast with bosses and lugs, with the base and setting arranged through the cemetery or a local monument dealer.

Mount Pleasant Group: the by-laws effective May 1, 2024

Mount Pleasant Group’s by-laws define a marker as “a memorial constructed of bronze or granite, set flush and level with the ground”, provide that “Only the Cemetery may install markers”, and require “a memorial layout and memorial permission form” to be approved before a marker is “inscribed, delivered or installed”. Section 4.27 sets the sizes: “Adult grave: shall not exceed 60.96cm (24in) x 45.72cm (18in); Child grave: shall not exceed 50.8cm (20in) x 30.48cm (12in); Infant grave: shall not exceed 40.64cm (16in) x 25.4cm (10in)”. Section 4.28 is the bronze rule: “Bronze markers must be attached to a concrete or granite base using a minimum of four anchor lugs prior to installation. Concrete bases must be no less than 10.16cm (4in) and no greater than 15.24cm (6in) in thickness. Granite bases must be no less than 7.62cm (3in) and no greater than 15.24cm (6in) in thickness. Granite bases cannot exceed the size of the bronze marker by more than 5.08cm (2in) on all sides.” Markers “shall not be delivered for the period December 15th through April 1st”, no photograph attachment is permitted on a flush marker, and no dealer’s or manufacturer’s name may appear. The company’s site says “there is no obligation to purchase from MPG”. Niche fronts are the exception: the cemetery reserves bronze work on them to itself.

Mount Pleasant Group fees from July 1, 2026

The price list effective July 1, 2026 charges to set a bronze marker on a concrete base $415.00 up to 12 by 20 inches or equivalent, $545.00 above that up to 18 by 24 inches, $670.00 up to 18 by 36 inches and $830.00 up to 18 by 48 inches; a bronze marker with a granite base is $490.00 up to 18 by 24 inches and $670.00 up to 18 by 36 inches. Care and Maintenance is $100.00 “on markers exceeding 173 sq. inches (1,116.2 sq. cm)”. For context, the cemetery’s own bronze markers on concrete start at $1,840.00 for 16 by 10 inches and reach $3,270.00 for 24 by 18 inches (2026). By area, a 16 by 10 inch bronze (160 square inches) falls in the first setting band and pays no contribution, while a 22 by 12 inch bronze (288 square inches) falls in the second band and pays the $100.00; a 22 by 12 inch plaque is $2,118.74 in our designer, shipping included.

Catholic Cemeteries, Archdiocese of Toronto: the by-law rules

The by-laws, revised January 2022 and reprinted October 2024, require written permission for every marker, requested by the rights holder at the cemetery office, and state that “All markers must have a cross incorporated into the design”. Bronze markers “must be cast with four integral bosses on the underside … anchor lugs of brass or bronze 4 inches in length and not less than 3/8 inch in diameter”, and “must be attached to a concrete base having a thickness of 4 inches, and have the same dimensions as the marker or set on a granite base with a projection of 2 inches on all sides of the bronze marker and 4 inches in thickness”. The cemetery “reserves the right to attach all concrete and granite bases to all markers” and its own employees do every installation. The minimum marker on a single grave is 18 by 9 inches; maximums are Infant 18 by 9 (22 by 10 at Christ the King), Child and Cremation 22 by 10, Adult 24 by 14, two graves 44 by 14 and three or more graves 56 by 16 inches. The delivery clause is the one to plan around: “Bronze markers will be accepted for installation from April 15th to November 30th of each year. Markers must be delivered in person to the Cemetery. Markers sent by mail or courier will not be accepted.”

Catholic Cemeteries fees

The foundations price list effective January 13, 2025 charges “bronze marker concrete base and setting” of $330.00 up to 22 by 10 inches or equivalent area, $480.00 up to 36 by 13, $665.00 up to 44 by 14 and $1,140.00 above, and “attaching bronze marker to granite base and setting”, with the granite base area used for the calculation, of $265.00 up to 26 by 14 inches, $370.00 up to 40 by 17, $535.00 up to 48 by 18 and $1,190.00 above. Setting a columbarium bronze plaque is $170.00 up to 11 by 6 inches or $210.00 up to 20 by 6 inches. The columns of that PDF did not extract cleanly, so confirm the band for your size with the office. The 2026 cemetery lists (Holy Cross effective June 19, 2026; Assumption, Queen of Heaven and Christ the King effective June 12, 2026) show cemetery supplied bronze from $1,840.00 for an 18 by 9 inch infant marker and a bronze niche marker from $795.00, setting extra.

St. James Cemetery and the City of Toronto

St. James Cemetery, owned by the Cathedral Church of St. James, still posts a price list effective August 1, 2023: marker setting $175.00 up to 20 by 12 inches and $245.00 from there up to 24 by 18 inches, a bronze plaque for the scattering garden memorial $525.00 plus HST, and “Bronze plaques for monuments: Pricing available upon request”. That list shows the Care and Maintenance contribution as $50.00 on one page and $100.00 on another; the regulation figure since 2022 is $100, so ask the office for its current list. There is no City of Toronto operated cemetery with a marker by-law: the Toronto Necropolis is run by Mount Pleasant Group and St. James by the Cathedral, so every Toronto grave falls under one of the operators on this page or under a smaller church or private cemetery.

What we supply for a Toronto grave and what is arranged locally

We supply the bronze, cast in solid LG2 statuary bronze with raised polished lettering, with bosses and lugs with studs on the back when you choose that fastening, and a cross can be set into the design for a Catholic grave. A 16 by 12 inch plaque is $1,580.02 in the designer, shipping included; at 192 square inches it pays the $100.00 contribution at either operator. We do not pour the concrete base or supply the granite base, and we do not deliver to a cemetery office or install. At Mount Pleasant Group the “bronze on concrete base” setting fee covers the base work, so ask the office whether it pours the base; at the Catholic cemeteries the by-law reserves the right to attach the base. Where you want granite, a local monument dealer supplies it and can carry the finished unit to the office in person inside the April 15 to November 30 window. A 20 by 10 inch bronze on a 24 by 14 inch granite base fits the Catholic adult maximum, and a 20 by 14 bronze on a 24 by 18 base fits Mount Pleasant Group’s. For a plaque on a monument, bench or wall see bronze memorial plaques and custom bronze plaques.

How to order

  1. Ask the cemetery office for its marker specification: the maximum size, the base it requires and the form it needs signed. Most offices email it the same day.
  2. Open the free design tool, pick the shape and set the size in inches or centimetres. The price in Canadian dollars updates as you go.
  3. Add the wording, choose a border and background, and add an emblem, motif or photo if you want one. Choose lugs with studs if the plaque will be bolted to a granite or concrete base, or a flat back for adhesive mounting.
  4. Save the design and order it from My Account. We send a written proof that you can forward to the cemetery for approval, and nothing is cast until you approve it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mount Pleasant Cemetery accept a bronze marker bought elsewhere?

Its by-laws require only that the marker be bronze or granite, within the size limits, attached to a concrete or granite base with at least four anchor lugs, and approved on a layout and permission form before delivery; the company’s site says there is no obligation to purchase from MPG. Only the cemetery installs it.

What size bronze marker is allowed at Catholic cemeteries in Toronto?

Minimum 18 by 9 inches; maximums 18 by 9 for an infant (22 by 10 at Christ the King), 22 by 10 for a child or cremation grave, 24 by 14 for an adult, 44 by 14 for two graves and 56 by 16 for three or more. Every design must include a cross.

Why must the marker be delivered in person to a Toronto Catholic cemetery?

The Archdiocese’s by-law says markers sent by mail or courier will not be accepted and that bronze markers are accepted only from April 15 to November 30. The plaque ships to you or your monument dealer, and one of you takes it to the office.

What does it cost to set a bronze marker in Toronto?

Mount Pleasant Group charges $415.00 to $830.00 for bronze on concrete and $490.00 or $670.00 on granite (July 1, 2026). The Catholic cemeteries charge $330.00 to $1,140.00 on concrete and $265.00 to $1,190.00 on granite (January 13, 2025), plus the $100.00 contribution at 173 square inches or more.

Is there a City of Toronto cemetery?

No City of Toronto operated cemetery with a marker by-law was found. The Toronto Necropolis is run by Mount Pleasant Group and St. James Cemetery by the Cathedral Church of St. James.

How long does a bronze plaque take in Toronto?

Allow about four to six weeks from payment to delivery. Casting and hand finishing take most of that time, and we send a free written proof before anything is cast. If your cemetery only sets markers in the frost free season, order early enough for the spring installation window.
