Quebec City has two kinds of cemetery office. Compagnie Saint-Charles, which runs Cimetière Saint-Charles, Cimetière Notre-Dame-de-Belmont and more than a dozen other Catholic cemeteries in the region, publishes a product catalogue but no règlement, no sizes and no fees, so everything is settled by phone. Mount Hermon Cemetery in Sillery, the Protestant cemetery on chemin Saint-Louis, publishes a complete English rulebook in effect since February 2024, with the exact marker envelope, the foundation rule and the winter pause. This page gives you Mount Hermon’s rules as written, tells you what to ask Compagnie Saint-Charles, and explains how a cast bronze plaque with raised lettering fits either. We supply the bronze, cast in solid LG2 statuary bronze with lugs and studs; the foundation comes from the cemetery’s authorized provider and the granite base, where one is used, from a local monument dealer.

Saint-Charles and Notre-Dame-de-Belmont, one company and no published rules
Cimetière Saint-Charles and Cimetière Notre-Dame-de-Belmont were once separate institutions; both web addresses now redirect to Compagnie Saint-Charles, the non-profit incorporated in December 1912 that the parish fabriques of Quebec City have belonged to since 2007. Its burial places include Saint-Charles (the old section on rue Saint-Vallier used from 1855 to 1965 and the newer section by boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel in use since 1966), Notre-Dame-de-Belmont, three mausoleum columbariums and at least twelve other cemeteries.
The company’s catalogue shows what it sells: monuments, “Base et contre base” (base and sub-base), “Plaques commémoratives pour urne” (commemorative plaques for urns), “Cadre en bronze” (bronze frame) and “Ornements en bronze pour niche ou crypte” (bronze ornaments for niche or crypt), with no prices, no règlement page, no size list and no fee schedule. Because the operator sells niche frames and bronze ornaments itself, as Catholic operators in Montreal do under a published monopoly, niche and crypt items probably must be bought from the company while a ground marker may come from outside after approval; that is an inference, not a published rule, so confirm it with the office at 418 688-0566.
Mount Hermon, the rules in full
Mount Hermon Cemetery at 1801 chemin Saint-Louis in Sillery publishes its Cemetery Rules, version 01, in effect February 2024, in English. Monuments are “memorials made of stone and/or metal added to a Lot”, either an upright headstone or “a Marker, a smaller one set directly on the ground”. Rule 6.1 requires that nothing be placed “until its design and the plans and specifications relative to the material, construction and proposed location thereof have been submitted to and approved by Management”. Rule 6.3: foundations “shall be provided exclusively by a provider authorized directly by Management at the Holder’s expense”, to the exact dimensions of the base. Rule 6.6 requires any stone component to be at least 3 inches (7.6 cm) thick and says “metal components must be reasonably rust resistant”, a test cast bronze passes without a coating.
Rule 6.8 gives the marker envelope: “A Marker must be no wider than thirty inches (30″) for every side-by-side Part making up its Lot’s width, no longer than twenty-four inches (24″) from the Header of the Lot inward and no higher than twelve inches (12″) from the ground.” Rule 6.9 restricts sections L and N to markers only; rule 6.4 allows one monument per lot unless Management authorizes more. Lots are 3 feet wide per part and 10 feet long, 8 feet in section N. Rule 4.8 charges 18 per cent annual interest on unpaid invoices, and no work proceeds until charges are paid. The rules publish no fee amounts.
Sizes that fit a Mount Hermon lot
A single part lot is 36 inches (91 cm) wide, and the marker on it may be up to 30 inches (76 cm) wide, 24 inches (61 cm) deep and 12 inches (30 cm) high. A flat cast bronze plaque on a granite base sits well inside that: the base gives the 3 inch stone thickness rule 6.6 asks for, and the bronze adds less than half an inch (1.3 cm). With a 2 inch (5 cm) border on each side, a 16 by 12 inch (41 by 30 cm) plaque gives a 20 by 16 inch footprint and a 20 by 10 inch (51 by 25 cm) plaque gives 24 by 14 inches; a two part lot allows up to 60 inches of width for a companion marker. In the designer a 16 by 12 inch plaque is $1,580.02 and a 20 by 10 inch plaque is $1,759.60, shipping included. Order the plaque with lugs and studs for mounting on a granite base by a local monument dealer, who delivers the mounted unit for setting on the authorized provider’s foundation. We supply the bronze; the base and setting are local. See bronze grave markers for how a finished flat bronze on granite looks.
The winter pause and when to order
Mount Hermon’s rule 5.5.1 states: “The Cemetery performs no Interments from December 1 to April 30 due to the winter conditions and any such requests will need to be deferred until May 1 at the earliest.” Disinterments happen only when there is no snow cover, and the office is closed on some days from 21 December to 30 April. Foundations are poured in the same frost free months, so a marker approved in autumn is normally set from May. Compagnie Saint-Charles publishes no calendar; ask its office whether foundations and settings stop at the first frost, as they do at most Quebec cemeteries. Our own time from payment to delivery is about four to six weeks, so an order placed in winter is ready well before the ground thaws, with the proof approved by the cemetery in the meantime.
What to ask each office
For Compagnie Saint-Charles, where nothing is published, ask these questions and write down the answers:
- Does the règlement allow a bronze marker (plaque en bronze) on my lot, and in which sections?
- What are the permitted dimensions for a flat marker and its base in my section?
- Does the company pour a concrete base (base de béton) or require a granite base (base en granit), and how thick?
- May the bronze come from an outside supplier, and must it arrive mounted on the base?
- What is the tarif en vigueur for the foundation, the setting and any permit, and when is it payable?
- Must the lot number appear on the marker, and in what size?
- Are niche plates, frames and ornaments for the mausoleum columbariums sold only by the company?
For Mount Hermon, the rules answer most of these. Confirm the exact dimensions for your lot, the name of the authorized foundation provider, the current charges, which are not published, and whether a granite base is required under the bronze. Ask both offices to approve the written proof we send before you give the go ahead to cast.
Bronze for urns, niches and gardens in Quebec City
Compagnie Saint-Charles lists plaques for urns and bronze frames and ornaments for niches and crypts among its own products, and its mausoleum columbariums are likely to follow the Quebec pattern of cemetery supplied niche fittings. For niches and crypts, buy through the cemetery or confirm in writing that an outside plaque is accepted before designing one. Where our bronze is freely used is away from the cemetery: a memorial garden at home, a bench or tree dedication on private property, a plaque on a family cottage, or a small plaque for a pet. See garden plaques, outdoor pet memorial plaques and dedication plaques. An 8 by 6 inch (20 by 15 cm) garden plaque is $674.98 in the designer, and all of these can carry French wording with accents, shown exactly on the free proof.
The price of the bronze from us, delivered anywhere in Quebec City
To keep the two kinds of cost apart, this table shows only our price for the bronze, taken from the design tool on this site on 14 October 2026 for a standard rectangle with the default border and background. Prices are in Canadian dollars and include delivery to Quebec City.
| Size, inches (mm) | Typical use | Our price, delivery included |

| 6 x 4 in (152 x 102 mm) | Name and dates on a small cremation plot, urn or pet memorial | $478.72 |
| 8 x 6 in (203 x 152 mm) | Cremation garden plaque or a short dedication on a bench or wall | $674.98 |

Setting fees, permits, foundations and care contributions quoted on this page go to the cemetery, not to us, and sit on top of the plaque price. For any size not in the table, the design tool prices it the moment you type the width and height, and that price also includes delivery.
How to order
- Ask the cemetery office for its marker specification: the maximum size, the base it requires and the form it needs signed. Most offices email it the same day.
- Open the free design tool, pick the shape and set the size in inches or centimetres. The price in Canadian dollars updates as you go.
- Add the wording, choose a border and background, and add an emblem, motif or photo if you want one. Choose lugs with studs if the plaque will be bolted to a granite or concrete base, or a flat back for adhesive mounting.
- Save the design and order it from My Account. We send a written proof that you can forward to the cemetery for approval, and nothing is cast until you approve it.
Frequently asked questions
Does Cimetière Saint-Charles allow bronze grave markers?
Compagnie Saint-Charles publishes no règlement, sizes or fees for Saint-Charles, Notre-Dame-de-Belmont or its other cemeteries, so only its office can answer. Ask whether a bronze marker is allowed in your section, what dimensions and base it requires, and whether an outside supplier is accepted.
What size marker does Mount Hermon allow?
Under rule 6.8 of its February 2024 rules, a marker may be no wider than 30 inches per lot part, no longer than 24 inches from the lot header and no higher than 12 inches. A 16 by 12 inch or 20 by 10 inch bronze on a granite base with a 2 inch border fits a single part lot.
Who builds the foundation at Mount Hermon?
Rule 6.3 says foundations are provided exclusively by a provider authorized directly by Management, at the holder’s expense, to the exact dimensions of the base. We supply the bronze; the base and setting are arranged locally.
Are there Quebec City cemetery fees for setting a bronze marker?
Neither Compagnie Saint-Charles nor Mount Hermon publishes foundation, setting or permit fees. Mount Hermon’s rules only say unpaid invoices bear 18 per cent annual interest and no work proceeds until charges are paid. Ask each office for its current tarif.
When are markers set in Quebec City?
Mount Hermon performs no interments from December 1 to April 30 and foundations follow the same frost free season, so a marker approved in autumn is set from May. Compagnie Saint-Charles publishes no calendar.
How long does a bronze plaque take in Quebec City?
Allow about four to six weeks from payment to delivery. Casting and hand finishing take most of that time, and we send a free written proof before anything is cast. If your cemetery only sets markers in the frost free season, order early enough for the spring installation window.
