New Brunswick has no provincial rule on grave marker size or material. The Cemetery Companies Act asks each cemetery company to make its own regulations, and the two companies that publish theirs online, Elmwood in Moncton and Fernhill in Saint John, show how different the answers can be. Elmwood fixes a flat marker maximum for every lot type on its June 1, 2024 price list and pours every foundation itself for $300.00; Fernhill sets aside a Bronze Urn Garden where the only marker allowed is a flat bronze one up to 24 by 18 inches. Fredericton’s cemeteries publish nothing, including a memorial park that appears to be marked entirely in flat bronze. This page gives the Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton detail in full, lists the questions to ask an office that publishes nothing, and explains how our cast bronze plaque is paired with a locally supplied base.

The Cemetery Companies Act leaves marker rules to each company

New Brunswick regulates cemeteries through the Cemetery Companies Act, chapter C-1 of the Revised Statutes 2011, with a General Regulation numbered 94-129. We could read the Act only in search snippets because the provincial statutes website sits behind a browser check, so take this as a pointer rather than a quotation: the Act requires a cemetery company to make regulations so that burials are conducted in a decent and solemn manner, and forbids removing a monument from a lot without the directors’ consent. Nothing in either document, as far as the snippets show, sets a marker size, a material or a setting fee. The controlling text is always the cemetery’s own by-law and price list.

Moncton: Elmwood Cemetery by-laws (May 2019) and 2024 pricing

Elmwood Cemetery on Elmwood Drive is run by the Elmwood Cemetery Company under by-laws revised in May 2019. Article 10.01 lets lot owners “erect and place suitable monuments with approved inscriptions”, but reserves all work in the grounds to the company’s authorized employees or permitted contractors. Article 12.01 permits “Upright monuments or flat markers” on any single lot within the allowable size, article 13.01 requires all monuments to “rest upon cement foundations”, article 14.02 allows one flat marker level with the ground at the foot of each grave in addition to a monument, and article 19.09 says no monument may be delivered until the foundation is complete. The gates are open from May 1 to November 1. Bronze is not mentioned by name, so ask the office to confirm that a bronze plaque on a granite base counts as a flat marker. The lot pricing sheet dated June 1, 2024 gives the sizes:

Lot type (Elmwood, June 1, 2024 pricing) Lot price (2024) Flat marker maximum Notes
Sections D and D2 double lot $2,500.00 48 x 22 inches Headstone base up to 48 x 14 inches; flat marker beside a headstone up to 18 x 10 inches
Sections D, D2 and E single lot $1,400.00 30 x 20 inches Headstone base up to 28 inches
Section D3 double lot $2,000.00 48 x 22 inches, or two at 24 x 22 inches Monuments not permitted
Section D3 single lot $1,200.00 30 x 20 inches Monuments not permitted
Urn Garden double lot $1,500.00 24 x 12 inches, or two at 14 x 7 inches Lot 3 by 3 feet
Urn Garden and E single urn lot $750.00 18 x 10 inches Lot 1.5 by 3 feet
Babyland $500.00 Flat marker only Size not stated

The same sheet states: “All Foundations will be provided and placed for $300.00” (2024). That one charge covers the cement foundation under a flat marker, and because only company staff or permitted contractors may work in the grounds, they set the marker. Fair Haven Memorial Gardens on Salisbury Road, an Arbor Memorial cemetery, and Our Lady of Calvary publish no marker rules or fees we could find.

Saint John: Fernhill’s Bronze Urn Garden and the 2026 price list

Fernhill Cemetery on Westmorland Road, a not for profit cemetery company, names bronze as the marker for a whole section. Its products and services page says that in the Central Avenue Urn Garden, called the Bronze Urn Garden, “One flat bronze marker may be placed on each of these graves” with a maximum size of 24 by 18 inches; that Water Avenue Urn Garden graves take one flat marker which “may be granite or bronze” up to 30 by 12 inches; and that “Bronze plaques are available to memorialize those resting in the niches” of the outdoor columbarium. The price list, which carried no printed effective date when we read it in 2026, sets the Bronze Urn Garden lot, for two cremated remains with bronze markers only, at $1,500.00 (2026 list), the Water Avenue Urn Garden lot at $1,500.00 and an urn opening at $675.00, with bronze plaques for outdoor niches “priced on individual requirements”. Lot prices include perpetual care. The list shows no marker setting, foundation or permit fee, does not say who may install a marker, and does not say whether a family may bring a bronze marker bought elsewhere. Ask the office those three questions in writing. Cedar Hill and St. Joseph’s cemeteries publish nothing we could locate.

Fredericton: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Forest Hill and Hermitage

Sunset Memorial Gardens is described in a cemetery directory, not by the operator, as a memorial park established in 1956 where all the markers are flat bronze, most with attached bronze vases. That is a secondary source, so we treat it as a strong hint rather than a rule: a park built on that model usually requires a flush bronze marker on a base and sets the marker itself. Confirm with the office what size of bronze it allows, whether the family may supply it, what base it requires and what it charges to set a marker this year. Forest Hill Cemetery on Forest Hill Road and the Hermitage cemetery of St. Dunstan’s parish publish no current by-laws, marker sizes or fees online. For any of these, ask whether a bronze plaque on a granite base counts as a flat marker, the maximum size and thickness for your section, who supplies the base and sets the marker, the charges and their year, and the months in which markers are installed. Our written proof, with the exact bronze size and stud positions, is the document to send with the approval form.

We supply the bronze, the base is arranged locally

Every size on this page is the outer size of a finished marker, and in New Brunswick that marker is a bronze tablet fixed to a granite or cement base and set by the cemetery or its permitted contractor. Our part is the bronze, cast in solid LG2 statuary bronze with raised polished lettering on a textured background, in any size from a small name plate to 22 1/16 by 15 3/4 inches (560 by 400 mm), with lugs and studs on the back for bolting through a granite slab. We do not supply the base and we do not install; the base is bought through the cemetery office or a local monument dealer, who cuts it to leave a margin of stone around the bronze. For Elmwood’s 24 by 12 inch urn garden limit a 20 by 10 inch bronze leaves a 2 inch margin at the sides, and that plaque is $1,759.60 in the designer. For Fernhill’s 24 by 18 inch Bronze Urn Garden a 16 by 12 inch plaque, which is $1,580.02, leaves a generous margin. For Elmwood’s 30 by 20 inch single lots a 22 by 12 inch plaque at $2,118.74 suits a couple. Shipping across Canada is included. Plaques outside any cemetery need no approval; see garden plaques.

Veterans’ graves in New Brunswick

Veterans Affairs Canada’s Funeral and Burial Program, delivered through the Last Post Fund, provides eligible Veterans with a grey granite military style marker and “in certain cases, flat bronze”. A family that wants a cast bronze marker of its own design on a Veteran’s grave in a civilian cemetery should ask the cemetery office and the Last Post Fund first, since no published program provides an upgrade or a refund and we promise neither. See bronze memorial plaques for emblems and borders.

How to order

  1. Ask the cemetery office for its marker specification: the maximum size, the base it requires and the form it needs signed. Most offices email it the same day.
  2. Open the free design tool, pick the shape and set the size in inches or centimetres. The price in Canadian dollars updates as you go.
  3. Add the wording, choose a border and background, and add an emblem, motif or photo if you want one. Choose lugs with studs if the plaque will be bolted to a granite or concrete base, or a flat back for adhesive mounting.
  4. Save the design and order it from My Account. We send a written proof that you can forward to the cemetery for approval, and nothing is cast until you approve it.

Frequently asked questions

Does New Brunswick have a provincial size rule for grave markers?

No. The Cemetery Companies Act, which we could read only in snippets, asks each cemetery company to make its own regulations and says nothing about marker sizes, materials or fees. The cemetery’s by-law and price list are the rules that apply.

What flat marker sizes does Elmwood Cemetery in Moncton allow?

Its June 1, 2024 pricing sheet sets maximums of 30 by 20 inches on a single lot, 48 by 22 inches on a double lot, 24 by 12 inches on an urn garden double lot and 18 by 10 inches on a single urn lot. All foundations are provided and placed by the cemetery for $300.00 (2024).

Can I use a bronze marker at Fernhill in Saint John?

Yes in the urn gardens. The Central Avenue Bronze Urn Garden takes one flat bronze marker up to 24 by 18 inches, and the Water Avenue Urn Garden takes one granite or bronze marker up to 30 by 12 inches. Fernhill publishes no setting fee or installer rule, so ask the office who sets the marker and whether a family supplied bronze is accepted.

Do you pour the foundation or supply the granite base?

No. We cast and ship the bronze plaque with studs on the back. At Elmwood the cemetery provides and places the foundation for $300.00 (2024); elsewhere the base and setting are arranged through the office or a local monument dealer working from our proof.

How long does a bronze plaque take in New Brunswick?

Allow about four to six weeks from payment to delivery. Casting and hand finishing take most of that time, and we send a free written proof before anything is cast. If your cemetery only sets markers in the frost free season, order early enough for the spring installation window.
