Edmonton publishes the most exact bronze marker specification of any Prairie city. Its Municipal Cemeteries Regulations and General Information, which govern Beechmount, Edmonton, Mount Pleasant, Northern Lights, South Haven, Little Mountain and Clover Bar cemeteries, carry separate size tables for flat bronze markers and for bronze plaques mounted on granite, require gussets on the back of every flat bronze, demand 2 inches of granite around a plaque on a base, and since September 1, 2025 require every flat marker to be 4 inches thick with no concrete encasement. Applications come from a monument provider, approval is in writing only, and City staff inspect and install flat markers between April and October. This page reproduces those tables and rules so you can design a plaque in our free online tool that matches them. We cast and ship the bronze; the granite base and the application are handled in Edmonton through a monument provider.

Edmonton’s Municipal Cemeteries Regulations
The City’s seven cemeteries are parkland under City Parkland Bylaw 2202, and memorials on them are controlled by the Municipal Cemeteries Regulations and General Information. The guide is direct about materials: “all monument materials, including marker bases, must be made of granite or bronze”. It defines “Bronze on Granite” as “a marker that has a bronze plaque mounted on a granite base”. The regulations distinguish the historical cemeteries (Beechmount, Edmonton and Mount Pleasant, or BM, ED and MP in the tables) from the newer grounds (Northern Lights, South Haven, Little Mountain and Clover Bar, or NL, SH, LM and CB); plot widths differ between the two groups, and applications for the historical cemeteries “may take up to two weeks for processing”.
Flat bronze marker sizes
Section 6.7.1 gives the limits for a flat bronze marker laid directly on the ground, all in inches. In place of a minimum thickness the table says “Gussets required”, and section 6.8 confirms that “Flat bronze markers must be raised on the backs with gussets”.
| Plot | Grave width | Foundation max length | Bronze die max length | Max width |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single, full size plot (all cemeteries); cremation plot at NL, SH, LM, CB | 48 | 42 | 36 | 18 |
| Single, child size plot and cremation plot at BM, ED, MP | 36 | 30 | 24 | 18 |
| Double, full size | 96 | 90 | 84 | 18 |
| Double, child size | 72 | 66 | 60 | 18 |
A 36 by 18 inch flat bronze is a casting beyond our 22 1/16 inch maximum, so Edmonton families buying through this site take the bronze on granite route in the next table, where a smaller plaque sits on a granite base that provides the thickness.
Bronze on granite sizes, the 2 inch margin and the 4 inch rule
Section 6.7.3 sets separate limits for the bronze die and the granite base beneath it, in inches.
| Plot | Grave width | Bronze die max length | Bronze die max width | Granite base max length | Base min height | Base max width |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single, full size plot | 48 | 38 | 20 | 42 | 4 | 24 |
| Single, child size and cremation plot at BM, ED, MP | 36 | 26 | 20 | 30 | 4 | 24 |
| Double, full size | 96 | 86 | 20 | 90 | 4 | 24 |
| Double, child size | 72 | 62 | 20 | 66 | 4 | 24 |
Two sentences govern the fit. Section 6.8: “All bronze-on-granite flat markers must have a minimum 2″ clearance from the outside edge of the bronze to the outside edge of the granite and be a minimum of 4″ in thickness.” And the special note in section 4.3: “Effective September 1, 2025, the minimum thickness required for flat markers will be increased to 4 inches. These markers will not be encased in concrete.” In practice a 22 by 12 inch bronze (559 by 305 mm) needs a granite base of at least 28 by 16 inches and 4 inches high, and a 20 by 10 inch bronze at least 24 by 14 inches. We cast the bronze with lugs and studs for the granite; the base is cut and the plaque fixed to it by the Edmonton monument provider who submits your application.
Who applies, who installs and when
Section 5.1 shapes how an Edmonton order works: “The City of Edmonton requires that a Monument Application Form be submitted by the monument provider detailing all specific monument materials, dimensions, scope of work, and any relevant monument installation fees.” Approval goes to the provider, “Monument Application approvals are only acceptable in written form”, and “Monuments arriving for installation without proper approval from the City of Edmonton will be refused and returned to the monument provider.” A family buying bronze from us therefore works with an Edmonton monument provider, who cuts the base, fixes the plaque, files the application and makes the delivery; forward our written proof to that provider so the form matches the casting.
Section 5.3 states that “City of Edmonton cemetery staff will inspect and install markers, subject to approval and stated requirements. Flat Markers will be installed April to October.” From October 1 installation depends on the weather and “The City of Edmonton will not guarantee flat marker installation after October 1.” The published timeline for 4 inch flat markers is 4 to 6 weeks from delivery.
Fees are quoted, not published
Edmonton publishes no dollar amount for its monument permit or flat marker installation. The regulations say only that “To place a monument, a permit application and the corresponding fee is required”, and the City’s pricing page states that “Final costs to be provided by the City of Edmonton Client Services team”. Your monument provider carries the permit and installation fees on the application form, so ask for them in writing with the year they apply to. For the plaque itself, a 20 by 10 inch bronze is $1,759.60 in our designer and a 22 by 12 inch bronze is $2,118.74, shipping included; a 16 by 12 inch plaque for a child or cremation plot is $1,580.02.
Niche and crypt plates only through the City
Section 5.2 closes one market completely: “Due to the operational logistics of crypt and niche cover memorialization, these services can only be purchased and arranged by the Municipal Cemeteries Sales and Administration office. These services cannot be provided by an outside vendor. This includes both engraving, laser pictures, photos, bronze plaques, and bronze wreaths.” If your family member rests in a City columbarium or crypt, the plaque comes from that office and we cannot supply it. Edmonton’s Fields of Honour are also closed to bronze: 15 by 39 inch uprights are the standard and “Flat Military Monuments are not acceptable” at the head of the plot. Families wanting a bronze marker for a Veteran in a civilian section should ask the cemetery and the Last Post Fund first; Veterans Affairs Canada provides a grey granite military marker and only “in certain cases, flat bronze”, with no published upgrade route.
Other Edmonton cemeteries
The Catholic cemeteries of Edmonton, Holy Cross and St. Joachim, and the privately operated Westlawn, Evergreen and Glenwood memorial gardens publish no marker regulations or price lists that can be read online, and we will not guess at their rules. Ask the office in writing whether a family supplied bronze plaque on a granite base is permitted on your section, the maximum bronze and base sizes and thickness, who installs, the fees with their year, and the installation months. Whatever the answer, the bronze is designed the same way: see bronze memorial plaques for emblems, cemetery plaques for lawn layouts and custom bronze plaques for ovals and circles. For a plaque at home, garden plaques need no approval.

Setting fees, permits, foundations and care contributions quoted on this page go to the cemetery, not to us, and sit on top of the plaque price. For any size not in the table, the design tool prices it the moment you type the width and height, and that price also includes delivery.
How to order
- Ask the cemetery office for its marker specification: the maximum size, the base it requires and the form it needs signed. Most offices email it the same day.
- Open the free design tool, pick the shape and set the size in inches or centimetres. The price in Canadian dollars updates as you go.
- Add the wording, choose a border and background, and add an emblem, motif or photo if you want one. Choose lugs with studs if the plaque will be bolted to a granite or concrete base, or a flat back for adhesive mounting.
- Save the design and order it from My Account. We send a written proof that you can forward to the cemetery for approval, and nothing is cast until you approve it.
Frequently asked questions
Does Edmonton accept bronze markers from outside the City?
Yes, through a monument provider. The regulations require all marker materials to be granite or bronze and set size tables for both forms, but the Monument Application Form must be submitted by the monument provider and approval is given to the provider in writing.
What size bronze fits an Edmonton single plot?
A flat bronze die up to 36 by 18 inches with gussets, or a bronze plaque up to 38 by 20 inches on a granite base up to 42 by 24 inches. The granite must extend at least 2 inches beyond the bronze on every side and the marker must be at least 4 inches thick.
Why does the marker need to be 4 inches thick?
Since September 1, 2025 the City requires every flat marker to be at least 4 inches thick and no longer encases markers in concrete. A bronze plaque alone is far thinner, so it is mounted on a granite base at least 4 inches high.
How much does Edmonton charge for a flat marker permit and installation?
The City does not publish the amounts. Its pricing page says final costs are provided by the Client Services team, and the monument provider lists the fees on the application form. Ask for the figures in writing with the year they apply to.
When will the City install the marker?
City staff install flat markers from April to October and will not guarantee installation after October 1. The published timeline for a 4 inch flat marker is 4 to 6 weeks from delivery, and applications for the three historical cemeteries can take up to two weeks to process.
How long does a bronze plaque take in Edmonton?
Allow about four to six weeks from payment to delivery. Casting and hand finishing take most of that time, and we send a free written proof before anything is cast. If your cemetery only sets markers in the frost free season, order early enough for the spring installation window.
